Sargento's Worst Company in the World?
Clorox: "Decision not to advertise on political talk shows"
Cites shows which "distort" facts to "blatantly partisan advantage"; Scope remains unclear

Clorox Inc. appears to be following in the footsteps of WalMart, by announcing it would be no longer "advertise on political talk shows". Clorox said they "do not want to be associated with inflammatory speech used by either liberal or conservative talk show hosts". The scope of this new policy remains unclear. WalMart itself told DefendGlenn.com on August 19th that it was removing "all advertising" from cable news talk, which we were led to understand meant EVENING shows, including MSNBC and some CNN shows. Clorox has not yet elaborated to us which shows would face this new policy, but the company is sure to catch hell from either side if they show ANY commericals on those shows from now on.

Here it the letter...

Dear Mr. Hill,

This is in response to your recent communication regarding Clorox Company
advertising.  Thank you for contacting us, we very much appreciate hearing
from consumers as The Clorox Company remains committed to quality
broadcasting.  We pride ourselves in being a responsible advertiser and
have established long-standing and strict standards for the selection of
television programming. Per our standards, we do not advertise in programs
that display exploitive sex or violence; treat ethnic, religious or
political groups in a disparaging manner; present facts inaccurately or
distort them to blatantly partisan advantage; and treat individuals or
groups in a demeaning manner
.

Clorox holds true to our advertising standards and we hold true to our
nation’s heritage of free expression of political opinions. However,
consistent with our standards, we do not want to be associated with
inflammatory speech used by either liberal or conservative talk show hosts.

After a comprehensive review of political talks shows across the spectrum,
at this time we have made a decision not to advertise on political talk
shows.

Today’s television programming environment is extremely challenging for
responsible advertisers. However, The Clorox Company will continue to
exercise special care in all program and station selection.  We do not want
to support programming that is in conflict with our programming standards.

Thank you again for taking the time to contact us.

Sincerely,

Clorox Consumer Services

Strong language by Clorox about "disparaging displays" they feel is endemic to cable talk shows "across the spectrum".

If this decision mirrors that made by WalMart, this will once again hurt MSNBC much worse than FoxNews, since MSNBC's fledgling shows will have a much harder time finding replacements. Glenn Beck's show is the highest rated show on cable news among the critical 24-54 demo, and garners TWICE as many viewers as Olbermann and Maddow COMBINED.

Although we feel sure you will see a breathless press release from Color of Change by tomorrow morning announcing "CLOROX PULLS ADS FROM BECK!!!", the reality is all these agitators have done with their overreaction to the Beck comments to inadvertently hurt their own left-wing allies at MSNBC.
